The Movement System

What you see is the result.Understanding begins beneath it.

A Ballroom couple travelling through a dark studio, with movement visible through the dancers, fabric and floor.

The Beyond The Steps Movement System is a connected framework developed by Blair Petterd to examine what creates Ballroom movement — not simply how it appears.

Built through more than thirty years of competing, coaching and studying movement, it gives dancers a clearer way to understand the causes behind the result.

01 /Why the System Exists

Being shown the result is not the same as understanding what creates it.

Traditional Ballroom teaching gives dancers a rich language for steps, timing, positions and technique. But throughout Blair’s career, one question kept returning: what actually creates the movement we see?

After more than thirty years of competing, coaching and studying movement, Blair developed the Beyond The Steps Movement System to give dancers a clearer framework for examining that question — looking beneath the visible result to understand the causes that shape the movement being created.

The question was never only:

What should I do?

It was:

What creates it?

02 /Cause Before Effect

The visible result is rarely where the movement begins.

In Ballroom, dancers are often asked to create a shape, position or quality that can be clearly seen. But the visible result is usually produced by decisions and relationships that begin earlier in the movement.

Beyond The Steps works backwards from the result — asking what had to happen for that movement to become possible in the first place.

We do not begin by asking:

What should this look like?

We begin by asking:

What creates it?

03 /A Connected Framework

Ten elements.One connected system.

The Beyond The Steps Movement System is built around ten interconnected elements. They are numbered for reference, not as a fixed sequence.

Their value lies in recognising how different ideas relate within the movement being created — giving dancers a clearer way to organise what they are feeling, seeing and producing without reducing movement to a checklist of steps or positions.

Ten interconnected elements

Not ten separate rules —

one connected way of understanding movement.

Numbered for reference — not sequence
04 /Movement Around Support

Movement is not a collection of positions. It is continuous reorganisation around support.

A position can describe where the body is at a moment in time. It does not explain the process that brought it there — or what must continue changing for the movement to remain alive.

Within Beyond The Steps, movement is understood as an ongoing reorganisation of the body around support. As support changes, the organisation of the body changes with it.

This shifts the focus away from reproducing isolated shapes and towards understanding movement as a continuous process.

A position is a moment.

Movement is the process.

What matters is not only where the body arrives — but how it continues to organise through the movement.

05 /What Understanding Changes

Once movement starts to make sense, improvement feels less random.

Understanding gives dancers more than information. It changes how they see, feel and respond to movement.

Clarity

Understand the reason behind the result.

Instead of relying only on corrections or imitation, dancers begin to recognise what is creating the movement they are trying to produce.

Connection

See how the movement relates.

Individual ideas stop feeling separate. Dancers begin to recognise how different parts of the movement influence and organise one another.

Independence

Develop a way to think for yourself.

Greater understanding gives dancers a framework for questioning, recognising and refining their own movement rather than waiting for every answer to come from outside themselves.

The goal is not to give dancers more instructions.

It is to give them a clearer way to understand their own movement.

06 /Experience the System

Bring the understanding into your dancing.

The Movement System becomes most valuable when its principles are explored through your own movement — with questions, feedback and application shaped around the dancer in front of Blair.
